A highly academic and insightful book with multiple perspectives on universalism. "All Shall Be Well" provides a great sampling into various universalisms ranging from a hopeful, "perhaps" universalism to a certain, confident "must." I will admit with 7.5 years college education that there are numerous theological and philosophical words that I would have to look up to understand. In fairness, a few footnotes explained some terms, but unless you're into it, who wants to read all the footnotes? So, the academic level of this book is intense, and that's what in part keeps me from giving 5 stars to this compilation. I think in laymen's terms, in better anecdotes, in clearer ways the same things can be shared, which would make this book even more catholic, universal in all its definitions. In short, it's now one of my favorite books but a few times, beyond the elite terminology, I thought, "Come on! Get to the point!"

A really well written book on eschatology and view of the significant church fathers. This book is an overview, but does a good job hitting major thoughts regarding the afterlife.

An amazing book filled with the promised hope of salvation. A worthy read for those exploring the doctrine of universal salvation or who want to trace the development of the doctrine throughout history.

I found it encouraging to see how and why different Christians have come to believe in Universal Salvation through-out Church History. The Introduction and chapter on Origen were particularly interesting as they explained the complexity (& dodginess) around the anathemas against Origen and why UR is still orthodox. The chapter on C.S. Lewis' hero, George MacDonald, was also excellent.

Whilst always being a contentious issues, the controversy surrounding universal salvation has intensified within ecclesiastical circles in recent years. The dominance of pluralistic liberalism in many mainstream churches has certainly contributed to this, but a more interesting factor is the increasing number of evangelicals adopting the view that universalism is an intrinsically Biblical position. Within the Catholic Church there is also a growing opinion amongst many theologians that Hell may be empty, with the Catechism of the Catholic Church stating this scenario is what the Church hopes and prays for. Is this hope well founded? This is the question that this book skilfully explores.Robin Parry (aka Gregory MacDonald) has done a fine job of editing this rather splendid collection of essays exploring a number of Christian thinkers who, through the centuries, have contributed to a Christian theology of universal salvation. Eighteen academics have each submitted an essay on a variety of figures who have in some way been significant to this stream of thought. As well as editing the volume, Parry contributes his own thoughts on the significance of Elhanan Winchester (1751-1797), a man about whom I confess to having been completely ignorant before picking up this book. A chapter is, of course, devoted to Julian of Norwich (c.1342-c.1416), whose famous axiom, ‘All shall be well, all manners of thing shall be well’, lends itself to the title of this volume. The figures explored are diverse, not just in terms of their great breadth across the centuries, but in terms of their theological temperaments and ecclesiastical allegiances. The majority of post-Reformation figures are Protestants, although Roman Catholics are to be found, with a particularly excellent chapter on the hopeful universalism of Hans Ur von Balthasar(1905-1988). Eastern Orthodoxy find a representative in the intriguing figure of Sergius Bulgakov (1871-1944). Some of the individuals are conservative; others, like John Hick (1922-2012) are so liberal as to justifiably be described as ‘post-Christian’. And not all, ironically, would actually consider themselves to be universalist. Nevertheless, a common theme develops and it is interesting how this is produced from such a diverse crowd of thinkers. The eighteen contributors mostly do a good job in exploring the thinking of their subject. Naturally some are, in my opinion, more engaging than others, but that is to be expected in a volume such as this. I did find myself disappointed by one contributor, but one out of eighteen isn't too bad at all. It should be noted that throughout the volume the style is firmly academic and not what one would call ‘light-reading’.It is important to stress that this book is an exploration, not a defence, of universalism. The purpose of this volume is, however, to invite further academic discussion. It certainly demonstrates, at the very least, that a hope for the reconciliation of all people to Christ is a belief that can be separated from mere sentiment and can, in fact, be cemented into serious theological discourse. I found much in this volume to ponder, and while I personally do have serious doubts that Hell will actually be empty, I will be very happy to be proved wrong. All in all, a very nicely produced book which should be of great assistance to those exploring the issues raised in discussing the theme of universalism.
