This book is a history of Operation Barney, the first large scale US submarine operation in the Sea of Japan during World War II. It is written by Charles Lockwood, commander of the US Pacific submarine fleet during the war. The writing is solid and the story of the adventures of the 9 submarines in the Sea of Japan is thrilling as Lockwood paints a vivid picture of the men and their operations as they traverse minefields, dodge depth charges, and stalk Japanese ships. I was left wanting more information on several topics touched on in the book, however, such as the US Navy’s struggle with faulty torpedoes in the early part of the war and the exact mechanics of maneuvering a submarine to get a good firing solution on a ship. Also, some maps would have been nice as I found myself constantly referring to Google maps to get sense of where the subs were operating. Overall, I highly recommend this book.
UNCLE CHARLIE LOCKWOOD WAS A SUBMARINER'S SUBMARINER. HE LOVED HIS TROOPS AND WENT TO BAT FOR THEM. THEY LOVED HIM IN RETURN AND SHOWED IT IN HOW THEY FOUGHT THE UNDERSEA WAR. THIS BOOK EXPLAINED HOW AND WHY THE SUBS WERE SENT TO PERFORM AN AMAZING DUTY. WELL DONE BOOK. NO FLASH OR RUFFLES AND FLOURISHES, JUST PLAIN TALK.
What a first class , well written account of operations of our boats in the Pacific. My uncle served on the USS Seal in the Pacific. I had the privilege of serving on the USS Hardhead in the late 60's. They were fine boats with outstanding crews. Every young man today should read this book.
Charles Lockwood brings another great vivid description of life of his submarine forces during WW2. It is very candid, intense, and detailed of how his submarine commenders and crew lived and died trying to stop the enemy from supplying troops by attacking supply and warships deep in enemy waters. I highly recommend this book to those who study those events or who want to learn how it really was being a WW2 submarine crewmenber.
Excellent read, opens a window in time and transports you to how life and death was in submarine warfare during WWII.
I completely enjoyed the book. My father was killed in WW II on board the USS Trout 28 Apr 1944. I have read every thing I could about the Trout as well other Subs but I never paid too much attention to the history of of the in the later part of the war. This book was well researched and well written. It was a hard book to put down. I strongly recommend Hellcats of the Sea to anyone with an interest in the history of WW II Submarines.
As far as the non-fiction WW II sub warfare books go this was a solid 7 on the one to ten scale. It was interesting to see how operation Barney evolved and was carried out by these true hero's.
Good Read. Many years ago I had the honor of meeting Admiral Sieglaff and his wife. I wish I had known at that time the contribution he made in our getting into the Sea of Japan!Wonderful read!
