From the Back Cover

PRAISE FOR GENERATION IMPACT "Today's emerging generation of donors are driven by a new definition of success: impact. This is clear through Goldseker and Moody's work, which uncovers the motives and approaches driving today's new strategic philanthropists. Many close friends are profiled in this book, and I can attest to their earnest, values-driven approach. For anyone who is eager to understand the next gen donor, this book offers truly valuable insights." —Howard W. Buffett, Lecturer in International and Public Affairs, Columbia University; Co-author, 40 Chances: Finding Hope in a Hungry World "Philanthropy is changing, and with it, the world. Generation Impact demonstrates, with data and vivid personal stories, that Gen Xers and Millennials are aligning their values, their giving, and their lives. This is a must-read book for anyone concerned with the future of philanthropy." —Peter Singer, Ira W. DeCamp Professor of Bioethics, Princeton University; Author, The Life You Can Save and The Most Good You Can Do "Finally! Goldseker and Moody have produced a sorely needed, clear-minded view of how Millennials and Gen-Xers approach giving. They slash some stereotypes—like Millennial selfishness—and offer other fresh views, showing in some ways how next gen donors approach philanthropy differently than previous generations, such as their willingness to 'use all the tools' and drive impact through for-profit as well as more traditional charitable means. But many young philanthropists are also simply following in their parents' footsteps. This honest look at next-gen philanthropy, told with well-written, real life examples, is a must-read." —Leslie Crutchfield, Co-Author, Forces for Good and Do More Than Give AN INSIDER'S GUIDE TO THE COMING PHILANTHROPIC REVOLUTION Meet the next generation of big donors—the Gen X and Millennial philanthropists who will be the most significant donors ever and will shape our world in profound ways. Hear them describe their ambitious plans to revolutionize giving so it achieves greater impact. And learn how to help them succeed in a world that needs smart, effective donors now more than ever. Next gen donors will have unprecedented resources to give, some as creators of vast new fortunes and some as the inheritors of the greatest generational transfer of wealth in history. If they succeed in revolutionizing giving, donors stand a chance to make unprecedented progress on causes from education to the environment, from human rights to health care. And instead of waiting until they retire to a life of philanthropic leisure, they want to make these changes NOW.

Through inheritance and through starting new businesses, younger people are becoming involved in philanthropy. there is a lot of publicity about spoiled rich kids and over-comsumption, and this book tells another story, about serious dedicated heirs and wealth creators who dedicate time, energy and creativity to the task. Today the concerns of the new generation are about the environment and other global crisis that threaten our future. This is the context where young donors are thinking about what do they want to do with their wealth. This book tells the stories of many of these new donors, personally and in their own words, and details how they are approaching this task. They are concerned about values and are more active and hands-on than their forebears. I love this book because, while it is based on research, it tells the stories of some public figures but goes beyond positive generalizations into how they came to their ideas, and how they develop their role as donors. The book is organized into themes and each theme has stories by donors. It is very well written and I found it inspiring as I went through it. This is an important book to share with young donors as they formulate their own ideas.

A must read for the next gen/rising gen of philanthropy— and their parents and grandparents, too!

Great insights into the NextGen. Very valuable for anyone involved in philanthropy.

The wisdom offered by Goldseker and Moody will allow readers to appreciate fully the power and passions of the next generation of philanthropists, young people who strive to infuse their talent, time, ties and money in the causes that matter to them most. What makes this book first-rate is that it reveals the distinctive strategies, commitments and capacities that this generation weaves together to advance social change through an artful blend of research, firsthand experience and thoughtful vignettes. While fully valuing the next generation and their desire to have an impact, the authors also offer nuanced insight that can help young people infuse their leadership with humility, and embrace opportunities with discernment.

Perhaps I'm getting old or perhaps I'm biased because this sounds so very familiar...every generation is different, each generation starts out with the intention of making big changes, each generation ultimately ends up looking very much like the last. Okay, setting aside my own misgivings, this is a well written, engaging and interesting book - zero complaints or criticisms in that department. What is a bit unsettling is the lack of criticism. It's overtly positive to the point that it simply fails to persuade. I'd like to have more insight into the less charitable and more practical drivers and motivation behind the "revolution" - the role of globalization, taxation, religion etc...anything other than the rampant and repeated - yet untested - optimism.

Sharna Goldseker has dedicated her career to understanding and researching Next Gen Donors. This book represents the culmination of nearly a decades worth of research and over two decades worth of experience. It is an essential piece of reading for anyone seeking to understand the motivation of donors looking to have a high-impact and involvement with their philanthropy. The unprecedented access Ms. Goldseker is granted is a testament to her talents in helping this cohort find meaning in their giving.

“"Let me tell you about the very rich. They are different from you and me. They possess and enjoy early, and it does something to them, makes them soft, where we are hard, cynical where we are trustful, in a way that, unless you were born rich, it is very difficult to understand."” – F. Scott Fitzgerald Modern philanthropy began with fantastically wealthy people like John D. Rockefeller, Andrew Carnegie, Henry Ford and surprisingly many more. Such people turned much of their wealth back to the community in the form of hospitals, medical research, public libraries and much more. Today, through inheritance, creative genius, hard work, luck or all of the above, many people are becoming rich much earlier in life. There is no shortage of causes and organizations clamoring to become recipients of their charitable largesse. This book concerns itself with how these young, wealthy will give and to whom. While not of immediate interest to me, because I am not part of the “philanthropic industry”, it is an interesting read and provides insight into a world I am simply not and never will be a part of.Jerry

It was nice to see Generation X included in "Generation Impact: How Next Gen Donors Are Revolutionizing Giving" by Sharna Goldseker and Michael Moody. For that alone, I probably paid more attention than I had expected. It is a good presentation on the subject and it covered more than I had expected. The central theme of 'impact' is a great theme to center on. We're asked to donate but impact does play a part in how the decision to actually donate happens. It was interesting how the authors present what that means. I expected it just to be 'how to attract donors' but it was more than that. It wasn't just about giving to an impact charity but also how the next generation is stepping up in participation. I liked that a lot.
