I thoroughly, and somewhat unexpectedly, enjoyed this book. What I mean is, while I was interested in the subject matter going in (otherwise, why buy the book?), I wasn't really prepared for just how much enjoyment I would get from it. I ended up reading it virtually straight through, over the course of a couple of days, whereas normally a book like this would stretch out to a week or more, with me picking away at it steadily from my perch in the bathroom or before sleeping. In this case, other activities had to make way for the book. The contents are too perfectly well described by the title to require much comment, although I will say that, having reached the end, I am disappointed that more attention wasn't paid to describing and explaining the art of trapping to us moderneers who haven't much of a clue beyond the obvious broad outlines. While many incidents are mentioned, it is often passed over so cursorily that, in hindsight, I'm not sure I always even knew, what the particular animal being trapped was. Since much of the history takes place in the northwest, from Montana to Washington, beavers are often mentioned as being the prey, but what was being trapped in other places is less clear to me--and in any case, I would have liked to have been told how the work was actually carried out in more detail. Much of that, however, can no doubt be put down to the reader of Mr. Hamilton's time being more familiar with such things than we are today, so my disappointment isn't with the author's skill as a writer and historian so much as with his rudimentary facility at predicting the future. The same might be said of his many interactions with Indians, both in war and peace, but to a lesser degree because he does devote more space to the details of such encounters. But I want more, so I'll have to seek out another book more single-mindedly devoted to Indian-dealing to help flesh out the picture.Have no fear, though. These are relatively minor niggles. As I said, I enjoyed the book very much and don't regret the money spent on it one bit, and if I had to bet I'd bet that you won't, either. Five stars for enjoyment, four for completeness and detail, averaging to 4 1/2 with 1/2 a star tacked back on for future prediction failure allowance, resulting in five stars overall for this exciting and entertaining read.

This is an incredible story of William Thomas Hamilton, Wildcat Bill (born Dec. 6, 1822, England—died May 24, 1908, Montana, U.S. age 85 ) mountain man, trapper, and scout of the American West. Brought to America from Scotland at age nearly three, Hamilton grew up in St. Louis, Mo., and began trapping at an early age on the North Platte and Green rivers in present-day Nebraska and Wyoming. This is a thriller and action packed real life adventure equal to any fictitious adventure published today. If these words were written by Hamilton, you can add great writing abilities to his repertoire, he must have kept a diary knowing that his life had historical context. Unfortunately he did not provide much about his personal life, and the ending ended rather abruptly. From his writing, he must have been quite a reader, and his ability to learn languages quickly and his organizational and situational awareness set him apart as an exceptional person with above average intelligence, and probably explains why he lived so long in such a dangerous environment.

"My Sixty Years on the Plains," by William Thomas Hamilton, beautifully evokes a word much different than our own. Just think, a book about trapping (now highly regulated), trading (even more highly regulated), and Indian fighting (by 'Indian' they mean Native Americans, young folks) and this activity truly is not allowed at all except under circumstances that create an exhibition.Well, this is a book from a time when all was new, the west was wild, and grammar was much better. A thrilling read as much because of the dialect in which it is written as for the tales it tells. And those tales are the truths of the day. Read this and fell as if you've taken a seat next to an old hand in a time machine built for two... This book will transport you into a fabled age that never will come again.

This is an interesting account of life in the Rocky Mountains, during the Mountain Man period , through the eyes of someone who was living the life. Definitely not the romantisized version of that life and definitely not the politically correct version.

The cover and description of this book reminded me of the Robert Redford movie "Jeremiah Johnson." I've always been fascinated by the beauty of the scenery, lack of dialogue, and the solitary life of the titular character of the movie, and I was pleased to find those elements in this book.As was true in the movie, the book contains a series of different but basically similar experiences. In that regard, it became somewhat redundant, making it hard to distinguish between chapters. Those interested in American history will appreciate Hamilton's references to specific people and places, along with his attempts to clarify many misconceptions about how things really happened during that time period in the American West.A map at the beginning of each chapter would have provided the reader an opportunity to visualize the area in which the events of that chapter took place.

I'm a history buff and have read a lot of journals and similar accounts. This is by far one of the better ones I've read, I couldn't put it down. The only thing that puzzles me a bit is that this was apparently written when he was in his 80's, and has a lot of incredible detail from incidents 60 years earlier. Maybe he kept a journal, or had a super-human memory, but the blow-by-blow accounts are quite detailed . I don't mean to detract from the book or author at all, it's really good, and he led a fascinating life... I guess I can only hope I'll be able to remember that level of detail when I'm 80!
