A great story. Adventure, gold mining, gun battles and more! I'm not so sure about a few things. And one thing that actively bothered me was the traditional give women the vote trope. Let me start off by saying, yes, and yes, its reasonable he did so and reasonable it passed. Historically there were two sufferage movements. One wanted to impose it on the federal level, the other said I'm not waiting and started petitioning individual states. with a 3 or 4 to one male to female ratio in the west, the men of the west didn't just say yes, they said hell yes offer those women the vote if that's what it takes to get some women over here! That this was passed over in favor of slaying male objections to giving women the vote was, well, fair enough. Our hero needed to run rough shod over any such nonsense as he very well did. But and this is a very big but, while slaying male objections he should have been blind sided by female objections. Women of that time had their own reasons for not wanting the vote and it had very little to do with internalized mysogeny and everything to do with the draft and fire duty. Forget the draft. I would have expected fiery proununciations from women that they were either A: ready willing and able to join the volunteer firemen department. or B: loudly objecting to being forced to risk their lives running into burning buildings. I'm not saying the hero would have made them do this, but their cultural objections should have whacked him upside the head and left him dazed for a moment or two before he settled it exactly the way he settled it. I mean who now a days expects it to be the women with actual objections to the right to vote? It was a total left field, historical reality, that it would have been amazing for him to be forced to deal with. Totally leaving him and the readers flabbergasted at 'the reality on the ground' during those times. heheheheOther than that it was a very fun read.
What can I say, very repetitive, dig gold, build more stuff, buy more stuff, train more people. I was really expecting a decent battle with someone maybe that nasty guy but really nothing eventuated.Also, the way he is sharing out the M4s to everyone is be bit silly. The MC was a gunsmith and he could simply be improving the existing weapons/pistols/rifles?? Even after 4 years sharing out the antibiotics and pain killers very generously instead of waiting too, like he has endless supplies???So no I was not as thrilled with this book and found it really dragged, getting sick of Anna's "LASERWATT smile" (aka i am going to get laid tonight) continuing to mentioned over and over again, perhaps time to move on from that.Perhaps some of it was me so I did keep it as a 4 star book although felt inclined to 3 star it. Also, a bit tiring his constant killing of the people going against him with, "whoops I went berserk again......" he did this a bit in book 1 too. I mean the MC is highly intelligent and highly skilled in martial arts and shooting so should have been able to control some of that a lot better too.I still am looking forward to book 3 but hope some of this the author can take on board. I enjoyed the back story of his revenge for the death of his best friend and yes, that helped explain some of his aversion to 'losing control' or constant killing. The extra characters like Tom and Yolanda being built up is great too. While often authors like to keep a popular series going for many books I think it is a fine line in dragging too much out and closing 1 issue to open new ones so instead of having the 'nameless' Boss constant floating thru 3-4-5 books which for me can end up being a deal breaker, lets get 'him' finished and maybe prepare for the civil war or other things? .
Don Paul and Dona Anna continue to build their stronghold in 1850s New Mexico, Estancia Dos Santos. Progress is becoming more evident and more people are beginning to notice, including their unknown enemy in Santa Fe. But Paul's secrets are still being kept from everyone but Anna and her grandparents. Although you have to wonder how so much strangeness (new weapons, new songs, new clothing, new food, etc.) is being overlooked by the people in this time period.Interesting plot, although the storytelling lacks a little flair. A lot of the actions and conversations are described rather than shown, but in most cases, I am fine with that. The editing could be better, but that goes for most books today, and it is not terrible. The villains go down a little too easy and there are some factual errors about Paul's weapons, but okay. I enjoyed the concept, so I was a little generous with my rating despite the average execution.
Shorter than the first one but still well written. Some repetitive phrases like "exploring the possibilities" as a euphemism for marital relations but "huge super megawatt smile" was at least used a little less. Also apparently there were herbs know in the 1850's to reliably prevent pregnancy without side effects and people with no experience of repeaters were only mildly curious about m4's and m9's and learned to use and care for them effectively in a few weeks. All in all the author took the license he needed to to make the story work though so I'm okay with it. Will read the next one.
Mistakes: I found only three in the entire book. Things like thee instead of the. Nothing major.Plot: to me this book focused mainly on relationships between the MC and other characters, focusing mainly on the MC and his wife. There is some town building and action as well to keep you from getting bored.I expect that the action will start to pick up in book three.Characters: I like them and appreciate Pickett getting a chance to change his fate, as I have always thought history has treated him rather poorly.8/10
This story is entertaining and well written. I would call it a combination sci-fi, drama, adventure, love story within a historical travelog. The author’s tale combined with his knowledge of the area and it’s history comes through in his descriptive settings and characters. The story is very captivating and I could not stop reading until it was finished. Now I’m awaiting (I’ll lie and say patiently) for Book 3, Retreat.
