It took me 3 days to get my business method provisional patent written and filed. Patent Pending in 24 Hours was a great help in understanding the process and for how to be a bit proactive about my provisional so I would be best protected for the formal application in a few months. The extra time I took was to better understand business method and software patents, which are not as well covered as straightforward as "thing" patents in the book. A bit of Googling and some time to complete drawings, flowcharts, and coming up with broad statements about other ways to accomplish with I invented took the rest of the time. The book well worth the money. Not so sure about using Nolo's filing service. That seems expensive unless you need some hand holding - the USPTO web site was very easy to use.You can prepare and file your own Provisional Patent by reading this book. Remember the US is now (May 2013) a FIRST TO FILE country like most of the rest of the world. It's not first to invent, it's FIRST TO FILE. A Provisional can reserve your place as first in line for $130 plus $25 for this book. That's good insurance to be able to decide up to 12 months later if you wish to spend the hundreds if not thousands of dollars necessary for a formal patent application.

Some of the material in this book seems outdated already. I was hoping this revision would include more information on the new America Invents Act which has taken effect in March 2013, but it briefly discusses it. A lot of mixed in historical trivia about other patents, which really means nothing to me. Now on the look for another reference that better covers these topics. Also... in many parts of this book, it tries to sell you on buying other books to fill in the gaps. I absolutely hate that. I paid for the information to be in this book, not some other book. Thanks for nothing. I'll not be buying anything else from this author or those who promote him. I bought this as a recommendation from another book by Stephen Key called One Simple Idea. In hindsight, I've realized I'm just going to have to painfully navigate my way through the USPTO's website to get the information I need and then move on from there, unless I can find another reference that breaks it down and addresses the key points directly. Sorely disappointed!

I'm a budding inventor who wanted to protection for a children's toy I invented recently. Using this book, I filed a patent application in about 15 hours. To understand the value of this book, you need to understand that there are two types of patent applications. The first is a Provisional Patent Application (PPA) which is an informal patent application that simply establishes a filing date and allows you to legally use "patent pending" for 1 year, when sharing your invention with others and testing its marketability. The second is a Regular Patent Application (RPA). This is a formal application at which the Patent Office looks closely and can result in patent protection for the next 20 years if it's granted. The PPA costs $100 for most, and the RPA costs thousands upon thousands. This book helps you file a Provisional Patent Application (PPA).I found it to be very clear, and told me what I had to do. It assumes you know nothing. I found it's example illustrations very helpful as I made up drawings, and particularly helpful was how to navigate the US Patent and Trademark Office site to download and fill out applications. It also gave some good tips for patent searching. The sample PPA, a doll that has "light-up" tears, gave me a good idea how to write the PPA.I did find, however, that the author constantly uses phrases like "For more information, see my book "Patent it Yourself" which I found a little frustrating. I ended up finding a copy of Patent It Yourself in the library to get some of my questions answered. Also, some foreign offices require information that is not explained in Patent Pending in 24 Hours (at least one "claim"), so I had to use Patent It Yourself to get this information, and include it in my PPA, so in this respect, Patent Pending in 24 Hours is not complete if you want international protection eventually.I recommend that you get both Patent It Yourself and Patent Pending in 24 hours if you want all your questions answered. They both contain information not found in the other.

Would be nice to have a version about ONLY the new patent laws!I do wish they had more info on actual REAL WORLD PPA's instead of using examples from 100+ years ago (when they didn't even have PPA's), but it still gets the point across. But I would like to see more variety on PPA's (not just printouts of regular patent applications like the book is full of). I would like to see a lot of examples of how much and how little you can get away with in a PPA. So it is lacking a certain completeness.

Although the title is somewhat misleading: it's almost impossible to submit a high quality provisional patent from scratch in 24 hours, the book contains very useful information for anyone who does not have in-depth knowledge of the provisional patent. The book is easy to read and understand. It's written in plain English.

Great. Loved it. You still need a lawyer though.

I am working on patenting and new to the game. I really think he has a good book here but I wanted something short and simple. I guess I need to buckle down and I am sure I will be happy to get all the info, when I finish and get my patent.

Just what I needed! I can protect my idea, try to market it, and then determine if I should invest in an official patent. This book describes how to prepare a Provisional Patent Application (PPA) which will guard your idea for 12 months while you try to prove the worth of your idea. Only 3% of patents make any money for the inventor. Submitting a PPA to the U.S. Patent Office protects your idea, but doesn't require the investment of a full patent. The book goes into detail about how to prepare a PPA, what steps to take, what forms to include, and gives lots of examples. Sidebars tell entertaining patent-related stories. Recommended!
