Great little book on Grant's wartime letters to Julia Grant. Shows a touching side to Grant in his confessions to his wife. He was a great man, general and President. This book is a great addition to my Civil War / US Grant collection. A note about description. This book is 166 pages long. Not 260.

Live this book.

The Library of American usually publishes massive books -- 900 pages or more -- but few have the humanity evident in this collection of letters between Grant and his wife. A few excerpts;Mexico, 1846:“Some of the volunteers, seem to think it perfectly right to impose upon the people of a conquered City to any extent, and even to murder them where the act can be covered by the dark. And how much they seem to enjoy acts of violence too!”From Tennessee, shortly after the fall of Fort Donelson in 1862: “These terrible battles are very good things to read about for persons who lose no friends but I am decidedly in favor of having as little of it as possible.”From Spotsylvania in 1864, nine days into the Wilderness Campaign: “The world has never seen so bloody or so protracted a battle as the one being fought and I hope never will again.”A deep insight into a great patriot and warrior.Robert C. Five stars for what it is, a small window into the dynamic of Ulysses S. Grant’s relationship with his wife Julia Dent Grant before and during their marriage.“My Dearest Julia: The Wartime Letters of Ulysses S. Grant to his Wife,” is a “Special Publication” of the Library of America (LOA) introduced by Grant biographer Ron Chernow who selected the letters. It is unclear if he wrote the text notes or if these were made by John Simon and John Marszalek, editors of the ongoing Papers of Ulysses S. Grant (PUG) from which the letters are drawn. The notes are generally biographic but occasionally add historical context. This book overlaps PUG letters Mary and William McFeely chose for the 1990 LOA Memoirs and Selected Letters with about a third of the letters new to the present volume. The title is something of a misnomer, especially for Part I. The early letters starting June 4, 1844 precede the March 1845 annexation of Texas. They are a mix of longing for Julia, whom Grant is courting, and descriptions of army life from the perspective of a young man beginning to experience a broader world. Not until his March 29, 1846 letter does Grant convey an expectation of war with Mexico. Part I concludes with 8 post-war letters written between 1849-54 when Grant resigned from the Army. Part II is comprised entirely of Civil War letters. “Coda” is a touching June 29, 1885 letter Grant wrote in anticipation of death. It was not included in the 1990 volume.Grant’s letters from Mexico are a mixture of courtship and expectation the war will brief allowing an early reunion with Julia. Gradually the realization sinks in that the Mexicans are determined to fight on. Even as they lose every battle they are exacting a high price from Taylor and Scott’s armies, both of which Grant fought in. Almost every letter includes a list of officers whom Julia probably knew now dead or wounded. Her brother Fred Dent is among the wounded although he is fortunate not to be maimed. At the same time Grant is awed by the physical beauty of Mexico and develops a respect for the Mexican people, if not their leaders.Grant’s Civil War letters are much more business like. Many read as if written in snatched free moments. They are shorter and focused on updating Julia and their children on his wellbeing and movements as well as Fred Grant’s when with his father in the field. Grant frequently suggests or requests actions by Julia, usually involving property, investments and education. As in the Mexican-American War Grant is slow to abandon his expectation of a brief war. Even after Shiloh he predicts one more battle will end the fighting in the West. In common with Lincoln, Grant struggles to accept that most white Southerners are wedded to rebellion. Over time he develop a grudging respect for the rebels as soldiers but never for their cause.Grant’s Civil War letter reflect caution never to risk giving the enemy actionable intelligence. They are noteworthy for almost total avoidance of politics and criticism of his fellow generals but also reflect a warm admiration for Sherman. There is little in them to justify Chernow’s assertion that the letters show a steady evolution of Grant’s attitudes toward African Americans and slavery. That argument is valid but the evidence for the case is elsewhere.
