Review

“The Eternal Current is an impassioned call to move beyond spiritual observation into divine participation. Jesus didn’t invite us to simply believe about the River of God; he invited us to swim! By learning from the perennial wisdom of the wide Christian community, Aaron has written a book that will launch you in your practice from the transcendent to the particular, and it will draw you in your faith perspective from the particular to the transcendent.” —Fr. Richard Rohr, founder of the Center for Action and Contemplation and author of Falling Upward “The Eternal Current is a gift, challenge, cure for what ails, and blessing. Rather than simply pointing to the problem, Aaron has put in the time and energy to craft a new way forward, not only for you as an individual but also for your faith community. This book will cause you to reimagine a life-giving, hopeful, centered, embodied, and living path to follow Jesus.” —Sarah Bessey, author of Out of Sorts and Jesus Feminist “Aaron Niequist has written the defining account of a generation of evangelicals who are disenchanted with the often shallow wells of evangelical spirituality and who are looking for a deeper, more robust, transformational expression of their faith. What sets his story apart, however, is that he stayed within his native tribe to contend for a different kind of space. The Eternal Current is the new construction on the other side of the deconstruction, written not by a theorist but by a practitioner.” —Jonathan Martin, author of How to Survive a Shipwreck and Prototype “You hold in your hand a brilliant exploration of those ancient but evergreen practices the church must recover to remain a vital and prophetic presence in the world. This field-tested and practical guide will equip and empower you to live in and lead others into the life-giving waters of a practice-based faith.” —Ian Morgan Cron, author of The Road Back to You “I am inspired by Aaron Niequist’s bold vision of a church that is open to learning from all the branches of our Judeo-Christian tradition. Aaron has documented one of the most refreshing approaches to practice-based discipleship that I have ever encountered. He doesn’t have all the answers, but he sure is asking the right questions.” —Fr. J. Michael Sparough, SJ, Bellarmine Jesuit Retreat House “For far too long we have wrongly equated depth of knowledge with depth of life when it comes to our discipleship. I’m so grateful Aaron Niequist has presented a creative vision for us to reimagine life with God. Aaron lays out a framework for us that has been tested in real community. Our churches and we as individuals desperately need to swim with this Eternal Current of practice-based faith.” —Rich Villodas, lead pastor of New Life Fellowship, New York “I value this book because of Aaron’s winsome way of inviting us to swim in the Eternal Current of God’s kingdom by engaging in the life-giving practices spiritual seekers have used through the ages to open themselves to God. And what a clear and compelling invitation it is, emerging from his own life and witness! I share Aaron’s vision for practice-based communities that learn together how to swim in the deep end of the pool for the sake of others, and I am glad we have taken the deep dive together.” —Ruth Haley Barton, author of Sacred Rhythms “Aaron has masterfully shared the skills he’s developed through the journey of discovery. This book is for all of us who want to discover how to grow deeper roots in loving God and our neighbor in the radical way Jesus described in the Gospels—through the rhythms of grace found in practices of public worship.” —David M. Bailey, coauthor of Race, Class, and the Kingdom of God study series“Reading The Eternal Current was like stepping into the current of my own heart. Aaron Niequist is a genuine encouragement to those of us who are working with the grace of God to practice ourselves into being followers of Jesus and his gospel of the kingdom of God. For those who want to take Jesus seriously, this book renews faith and reveals a fresh perspective on church.”  —Todd Hunter, Anglican bishop and author of Giving Church Another Chance

The Eternal Current is a book that will change the conversation in many churches today. Aaron Neiquist weaves the personal and the communal together, as he shares his spiritual journey that ultimately gave rise to The Practice, a weekly worship gathering affiliated with Willow Creek Church in South Barrington, IL. Neiquist paints the portrait of a “practice-based faith”—one that is anchored in ancient personal and communal spiritual practices such as daily prayer (the Daily Office & the Examen), engagement with Scripture (Lectio Divina), weekly Eucharist, etc. These practices keep us from drowning, Neiquist says, when swimming in the swirling current of Grace. But these practices aren’t just for our enrichment: they are engaged “for the sake of others.” A practice-based faith is not just another church growth scheme; it is a path that leads to spiritual transformation as the Kingdom becomes a living reality in our midst. If you’ve ever felt “there must be more” to Church than just showing up on Sunday morning, singing a few songs, putting some money in the offering plate and shaking the minister’s hand on the way out the door after the service, then this is the book for you!

"A great and mighty River flows throughout history and toward the healing and restoration of all things...You and I have been invited to swim with this Eternal Current for the sake of the world. Jesus didn't merely invite us to believe about the River. He didn't say, 'Here is the truth. Believe me.' He declared, 'I am the truth. Follow me.' The invitation is to wade into the River and swim."This is how The Eternal Current begins and it just gets better from there! Aaron not only shares some of his own personal journey and the journey of the Practice community but also masterfully weaves throughout the book the wisdom of so many who have wrestled with these questions and point to a non-dualistic practice-based faith. I just read it cover to cover and have been swept up all over again by the invitation to wade in and swim!

This book challenges the way the modern evangelical church views what it means to be a practicing Christian. It challenges Christians to break the formula of Church as entertainment and teaching provided by a minister to a focus on God and actually practicing our faith as individuals AND a body of believers. As a long-time Christian, I feel like I have been knocked out of a rut and given a different path to follow. Thought provoking!

Aaron Niequist's The Eternal Current is a much needed antidote for the Church's preoccupation with consumerism. Short and concise, The Eternal Current walks through Niequist's personal story of creating an intentional and practice-based faith community within one of the largest megachurches in the country. With the help of a few spiritual advisors, Niequist helped design a liturgy for a churchgoers burned out of empty sermons and "fast food Christianity." By reclaiming some of the practices and traditions lost by time and ignorance (like liturgical readings, contemplative prayer, the Eucharist, and other spiritual disciplines), Niequist and his team discovered a deep hunger in their congregation for a faith that exists outside of their headspace.Easy to read, and with a few instructions to put into place in your personal life and small group community, The Eternal Current is a breath of fresh air and will have you dreaming about the possibilities of what Church could be.

I’ve been hoping for this book for years. This is a story of lived experience filled with invitation for the reader to consider a hopeful, centered way forward in living their own faith experience. Think kind encouragement from a friend who’s been there more than a bossy formula from a removed theorist. This book is the kind of challenge that invites response instead of defensiveness, and opens up space to guide with questions instead of directives.I’ve wanted to hear more of Aaron Niequist’s story of what practice looks like lived out for years now, and I’m grateful this book is in the world now, answering and asking these questions, and pointing me toward more tools and writers and resources.I’m on the launch team for The Eternal Current, which means I received an early ebook and I’ll also get a free hardcover. I preordered this book long before I knew I’d get to be part of the launch team. This is my honest review.

I was drawn in by Aaron's honesty about his struggle with his faith and some of the things he had been taught to believe. I have lived in a purely Evangelical culture for 35 years but in the last few years I have discovered the variety and value to the life of the church outside those limiting Evangelical lines. Aaron's book has been a further encouragement that I am not alone in embracing a broader application of following Jesus. Thank you Aaron for your courage to experiment and push forward. Glad to be swimming out here with you!

This book keeps surprising me! Just when I think I hit “the good part”, the next chapter is even better. Seriously, I may have found my new favorite book. Inspiring, humbling, informative, centering, challenging. Thank you Aaron for sharing so much wisdom from your journey with Jesus. It’s crazy how much our stories have been on a parallel path. If you're a pastor, follower of Jesus, or in a season of desiring more from spirituality, definitely get this book!!

The cover of this book says so much. There's a table a current of water that supports bread and wine, the central elements of Christian communion. Niequist tells his story of discovering that church is filled with flawed humans and how that can impact faith. He provides concrete examples of ways that churches can provide more than a lesson on Sundays, but experiences that prepare people to connect with God throughout their lives. This book is especially designed for Evangelical Christians that are struggling with the church and faith.
